The concept of “Gulaza” was born when Igal Mizrahi and Ben Aylon joined to create a duet between an ancient yemenite song and the sound of the african N’goni, as a part of a concert in a famous festival in Europe.

Igal, whose father is of Yemenite origin and mother of Moroccan descent, born in Algeria, was exposed in his life to the hidden and fascinating world of Yemenite Women, and has spent years studying their traditional songs and texts that expresses the marginalised life in the Yemenite society. These songs were told as secrets and have been preserved for generations from word of mouth, from mother to daughter.

Ben, who explored the African culture and studied in West Africa with the greatest artists and local musicians understood the deep connection that exists between the cultures and joined Igal to a journey throughout the fascinating musical world of women in Yemen.

Together they began working on songs collected by Igal for years both from childhood memories and personal meetings with old Yemenite women. The starting point of the creative process was influenced by the Yemenite Jewish tradition, that used singing and drumming alone, as since the destruction of the Holy Temple it was forbidden to use musical instruments as a sign of mourning.

During their creation came the desire to expand the statement to a more universal one, and they began to look for more instruments. Ian Aylon, a guitarist specializing in South American folklore, jazz and classical guitar, joined as he added the harmonic part and complements the natural connection between Igal’s voice and the rhythms and N’goni playing of Ben. Hila Epstein, brought the classical world with the cello, adding bass, warmth and tenderness into the music of “Gulaza”.

Gulaza will perform internationally in 2016: Spain, Austria, China, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia and Serbia.
and in festivals such as: Tres Culturas Festival, EtnoKrakow, Mikser Festival, CPH World Music Festival, OCT-Loft Jazz Fest, Boskovice 2016 and Mazal Tov Festival to name a few.

Gulaza have performed all around Israel in prestigious festivals and venues such as: Beit Avi Chai (Jerusalem), Felicja Blumental Music Center, Suzanne Dellal Dance Theater, Inbal Ethnic Center, White Night Festival (Tel Aviv), Confederation House (Jerusalem), International Sacred Music Festival (Jerusalem), International Music Showcase (Jerusalem) and many more.

Número 3 de la Transglobal World Music Chart en octubre de 2015 y nominados para la categoría de mejores nuevos grupos en los Songlines Music Awards 2014. Monsieur Doumani se formó en 2011 en Nicosia, con Antonis Antoniou (tzouras), Angelos Ionas (guitarra) y Demetris Yiasemides (vientos). Aunque cada miembro de Monsieur Doumani llegaba con su propio bagaje estilístico y musical, todos están tocados y hechizados por la música popular y tradicional de Chipre.

Su objetivo es agregar su propio color especial en el sonido y el sentimiento de las músicas tradicionales chipriotas. También componen sus propias canciones en el dialecto chipriota del griego, inspiradas en las actualidades del país, como, por ejemplo, la reciente crisis financiera que golpeó la isla o el sistema político corrupto.

Su formación musical les ha hecho conocedores de otros estilos musicales, pero siempre se han dejado llevar por la fascinación de la sencillez, la belleza y las melodías únicas de la música tradicional de su tierra. Esta es la singularidad que Monsieur Doumani ha potenciado, enriqueciendo esas canciones tradicionales con nuevos arreglos, melodías, ritmos y sonidos, elaborando un estilo distintivo propio. El elemento tradicional se pone de relevancia en la diversidad de estilos musicales que se perciben en el tratamiento fresco y audaz que Monsieur Doumani hace del folklore chipriota.

En este 2015 Monsieur Doumani lanzó su segundo álbum, Sikoses, un disco basado principalmente en sus propias composiciones, inspiradas en la tradición, pero reflexionando sobre la sociedad contemporánea chipriota. El álbum ha llegado al llegar al número 3 en octubre de 2015 en la Transglobal World Music Chart, confeccionada por especialistas de todos los continentes, ha sido “Top of the World” en el nº 108 de la revista, “Album choice’ de la revista fRoots, recibiendo muy favorables críticas de otros medios de comunicación internacional. También alcanzó el nº 1 en la “audio chart” de World Music Network del mes de junio.

Su anterior disco Grippy grappa (2013) ya les había supuesto llegar a ser nominados para la categoría de “best newcomer” de Songlines, recibiendo excelentes críticas internacionales, como las del diario británico The Guardian, la revista francesa Les InRocks o la prestigiosa revista británica fRoots. También fue “Top of the World” en el nº 95 de la revista Songlines y llegó al nº 12 en la lista de agosto de World Music Network, mientras que su canción Out-of-touch guy llegó al nº 4 en la lista de videos de noviembre de WMN. Previamente habían editado el EP Cyfolk (2012).

Sus actuaciones en festivales y escenarios de toda Europa (WOMAD, Songlines Encounters, Cheltenham, Sommarscen Malmö, Telemark Folk Festival, Ferrara Buskers Festival…) han sido muy bien recibidas por el público, mientras su música sonaba en emisoras y programas de todo el mundo: BBC, NPR, Radio France, Sveriges Radio, Mundofonías, PBS FM Melbourne, etc…

En 2014 Vigüela comienzan un trabajo de revisión de su propio enfoque en la interpretación de la música tradicional, dando un paso más allá en la recuperación de un lenguaje musical arcaico que se ha mantenido hasta nuestros días en contextos generalmente ajenos al circuito profesional de la música y que, a menudo, se ha menospreciado e infravalorado. Así, Vigüela declaran que:

Siempre nos ha gustado escuchar las músicas “de antes”. Generalmente, de una forma romántica nos hemos creado un ambiente idílico imaginario donde poder encuadrarla. En el mundo rural, la vida campesina, todo tan bucólico… tan poco real como la reinterpretación y la recreación de la misma música.

La reinterpretación de la música “de antes” hoy, generalmente no se hace de acuerdo a los parámetros, los conceptos y los códigos con los que siempre se ha hecho. Existe una forma de entender y comprender esta música trasmitida generacionalmente. Hablamos de formas de hacer música, anteriores a las nomenclaturas musicales y el lenguaje musical actual como hoy es entendido por la academia.  

La musicalidad y el habla con su melodía particular (propia de cada sitio), como la forma de decir las cosas con su entonación correspondiente, se aprende a lo largo de la vida. Esto se hace por necesidad para poder formar parte y comunicarte con la comunidad a la que pertenecemos.  

Después de algún tiempo preguntándonos por qué la música que hacemos ahora cuando queremos remedar lo de antes no suena igual, hemos llegado a la conclusión de que ahora no utilizamos ni los mismos códigos, ni el mismo concepto de lenguaje musical que se usaba antes. Al trabajar sobre estas nuevas formas, el ritmo, el compás y la métrica dejan de tener protagonismo, siendo más importantes las melodías y sobre todo los acentos musicales que encierran estas.

Los repertorios son importantes, pero lo es más aún con que estilo se usa ese repertorio. Las melodías dejan de pertenecer a canciones y pasa a tener más importancia el o los estilos con los que se pueden interpretar estas. Hemos concluido, pues, que los repertorios son indistintos a la época del año y que lo que realmente se ubica entre unas fechas es el estilo con que se les interpreta. La forma de expresar la música es diferente en Nochebuena que en el resto del año, por ejemplo… Los estilos de interpretación del espectáculo se refieren a cualquier época del año excepto la Nochebuena, donde las melodías tendrían un enfoque diferente. 

Vigüela es uno de los conjuntos que desde más tiempo (más de 30 años), con más constancia y con completa honestidad se dedican a recrear y mantener vivo el repertorio de la música tradicional castellana, especialmente de su tierra toledana y alrededores.

A su labor de transmisores y recreadores añaden su faceta de estudiosos e investigadores, interviniendo en congresos de musicología y antropología y participando con su conocimiento en la selección de audios y la elaboración de los textos de la recopilación de grabaciones que el musicólogo norteamericano Alan Lomax realizó en el año 1952 en tierras de la actual Castilla-La Mancha, así como en la recreación de su trabajo de campo, localizando y documentando, 50 años después, a los informantes que siguen vivos entre los que el propio Lomax grabó.

Vigüela han participado en los más prestigiosos festivales de folk de toda la geografía española y han actuado también en Gran Bretaña, invitados por la BBC, y en Portugal, representando a España como país invitado del Festival Bons Sons 2012.

Por todo ello, Vigüela representan la esencia de la tradición musical de su tierra y son intérpretes de primera categoría, con una afinación exquisita y una gran capacidad para adornar las melodías con sus voces melismáticas. Voces, guitarra, laúd, bandurria, guitarro manchego, rabel y percusiones son sus argumentos.

Sus actuaciones son siempre un éxito porque saben establecer una comunicación directa con el público, de modo que los espectadores se hacen coprotagonistas del espectáculo.

Vigüela take their tradition with accuracy and show it is a living music, full of joy, and showing it doesn´t need to be denatured to divulge it. They have been working for 30 years to keep alive this repertoire and style from their land, Castilla La Mancha. They have played all over Spain and also in Great Britain, invited by the BBC, and in Portugal, representing Spain at the Festival Bons Sons 2012.

Therefore, Vigüela’s work is essential for the traditional music from their land. They are also very good performers, that sing exquisitely the very melismatic repertoire, fruit of the melting pot that have been the Iberian peninsule, where the North African influences are obvious.

Voices, guitar, lute, bandurria, guitarro manchego, rebec and percussion are their tools for concerts that are always a success, as they know how to create a conextion with the public, and they are co-starts in the show.

El legado musical que Polonia ha aportado al mundo es sin duda de los más amplios y de mayor alcance. Mazurcas, originales de un contexto rural y fuente de inspiración para versiones por todo el mundo, desde Suecia a Filipinas, pasando por Cabo Verde y América Latina, y polonesas, danzas asociadas a las clases nobles, eran ya términos de difusión global, mucho antes de la era de la información, sistematizadas y elevadas al contexto de la música erudita occidental por autores referenciales, como el romántico Frédéric Chopin, y por otros muchos, no polacos también, como Telemann, Músorgski, Débussy, Ravel, Scriabin, Borodin, Dvořák o Schubert.

¿Qué honda emoción subyace a una música que ha subido a los palacios y ha bajado a las cabañas, que ha recorrido siglos y continentes, en una transmutación inconclusa? Es la misma emoción, a veces contenida, a veces arrebatada, de la música que nos ofrecen Janusz Prusinowski Kompania.

Janusz ha encontrado esa emoción precisamente en los portadores de esa herencia popular, en sus fuentes vivas, que son los viejos músicos rurales. Desde de su punto de vista contemporáneo, con ese profundo conocimiento unido a una gran destreza técnica, dan un paso adelante para crear un nuevo repertorio que crea belleza y verdad.

Janusz Prusinowski es violinista, toca el acordeón polaco, el cimbalón y canta con una naturalidad como quien respira. Piotr Piszczatowski aporta la percusión, con sus patrones imprevisibles que el cuerpo acaba sintiendo como evidentes. Michał Żak es responsable de los vientos, toca flauta, clarinete y una chirimía que recuerda a las dulzainas más arabizantes de la música del Levante ibérico. Piotr Zgorzelski toca el muy peculiar bajo folk, cuya forma es más bien la de un violoncello y ejerce con destreza de maestro de baile cuando el contexto se presta a ella. El sonido nostálgico y desgarrador de la trompeta es a cargo de Szczepan Pospieszalski.

El trabajo de Janusz durante 20 años en la búsqueda de esos viejos maestros, así como su labor de fundador y director artístico del Festival Mazurcas del Mundo, en Varsovia, le han hecho valedor de la medalla de bronce Gloria Artis, del Ministerio de Cultura y Patrimonio Nacional polaco, en diciembre de 2014.

El grupo ha presentado su directo y han desarrollado talleres de danzas tradicionales en teatros, festivales al aire libre, museos,… por toda Europa, en Canadá y Estados Unidos, donde han tocado en templos de la música como el Carnegie Hall de Nueva York o el Chicago Symphony Center, y en Asia, y han sido parte de la selección artística de la feria mundial más importante de músicas del mundo: Womex Salónica 2012 y Womex Cardiff 2013. Con ellos se abre un nuevo ciclo en la larga historia de la conquista global de la música polaca.

The musical legacy that Poland has provided to the world is undoubtedly one of the largest and with widest reach. Mazurkas (mazurek), from a rural context, source for the inspiration of variants all over the world, from Sweden to Philippines, from Cabo Verde to Latin America, and polonaise dances (chodzony), refined in the aristocratic circles, were terms of global outreach much more before the Information Age, systematized and raised to the classical music context by key composers, like the Romantic Frédéric Chopin and much more, also no Polish ones, like Telemann, Músorgski, Débussy, Ravel, Scriabin, Borodin, Dvořák or Schubert.

Which is the deep emotion that underlie in a music that, refering to the Romantic character of the Spanish literature Don Juan, has climbed to the palaces and has gone down to the huts, that has gone across centuries and continents, in an unfinished transmutation? That is the same emotion, sometimes contained, sometimes unbridled, of the music that Janusz Prusinowski and his partners offer.

Janusz has found that emotion exactly in its bearers of that popular inheritance, in its living sources: the old rural musicians. From his contemporary approach, with that deep knowledge, combined with their high technical skills, Janusz and his partners take a step forward to build a new repertoire that creates beauty and truth.

The work made by Janusz for more than 20 years searching those old masters, as well as his iniciative as founder and artistic director of the Wszystkie Mazurki Świata (Festival Mazurkas of the World) in Warsaw have earned him the bronze medal Gloria Artis, by the Ministry of Culture and National Patrimony from Poland, on December 2014.

Janusz Prusinowski is violinist, plays the Polish accordeon, the cymbal and sings in a manner as natural as breathing. Piotr Piszczatowski provides the percusion, with its unpredictable patterns that the body finally feels like evident. Michał Żak is in charge of the wind instruments, playes flute, clarinet and a shawm that remember the Arabised dolçainas from the Iberian East. Piotr Zgorzelski plays the very peculiar folk bass, with a shape similar to a cello and acts with dexterity as dancing teacher wherever the contexts is suitable for it. The nostalgic and heartshaking sound of the trumpet is provided by Szczepan Pospieszalski.

The band has played all over Europe, at Canada and the USA, where they have played in temples of the music, like the Carnegie Hall in New York and the Chicago Symphony Center, also in Asia, and they have been selected for the most important global trade fair of world music: Womex Thessaloniki 2012 and Womex Cardiff 2013.

With them a new cycle in the long History of the global conquest by Polish music is open.

Desde el Cerrato palentino, El Naán pone el folk castellano en pleno siglo XXI, utilizando códigos artísticos que conectan tanto con la gente mayor, depositaria del legado de la música tradicional, como con los jóvenes, por sus letras, poéticas y evocadoras, su espectáculo, muy visual y dinámico y la interpretación apasionada por parte del grupo de un repertorio de extrema belleza y calidad estética.

La propuesta artística:

Desde Tabanera de Cerrato, Palencia, El Naán parten de la música castella tradicional y la enlazan con las músicas de raíz de todo el mundo, convirtiéndola en una propuesta universal. Su segundo disco, Código de barros, ha sido autoproducido para España mediante una campaña de micropatrocinio y será editado internacionalmente por el sello inglés Arc Music, una de las principales referencias mundiales en las músicas del mundo y el folk.

La propuesta de El Naán ha alcanzado gran interés en la prensa nacional, con apariciones en El País (entrevista y reportaje y previa del concierto de presentación en Madrid), con fotos incluidas, incluso dos veces en la misma semana, han aparecido en emisoras de radio nacionales e internacionales y en medios especializados.Su concierto combina la música tradicional, con códigos y timbres reconocibles por el público, y otros sonidos y ritmos que han influido en la cultura castellana, como los ritmos de ida y vuelta venidos de América y los sonidos árabes. Todo ello lo ofrecen en un concierto muy hermoso, con aspectos de escenografía que lo acercan a una obra teatral, con intervenciones intercaladas de un rapsoda que canta a las musas y a los placeres y la presencia de elementos visuales y de video-arte.

El Naán’s artistic proposal starts out from Castilian traditional music and connects it with roots music all over the world, turning it into a global proposal. Their second album, Código de Barros, has been self-produced and first published in Spain thanks to a successful crowdfounding, and now it is published by the British label Arc Music, one of the main global references in folk and world music. Código de Barros means mudcode, and it´s a words game with bars code, that’s código de barras in Spanish. El Naán’s proposal has attracted great interest in the national press, with appearances in the main Spanish newspaper, El País (interview and report and a new prior to the presentation concert in Madrid), including pictures, even twice in the same week. They have also appeared in national and international radio stations and specialized media.
		The artistic proposal: Their show combines traditional music, with codes and sounds recognizable by the audience, and other sounds and rhythms that have influenced the Castilian and Spanish culture, like the “round trip” rhythms that went and came from the Americas, and also the Arab and Oriental sounds. Melech Mechaya began 2015 playing in two of the main temples of music in their homeland Portugal, Casa da Música, in Oporto (Friday 17th), and Centro Cultural de Belem, in Lisbon (Friday 23th), showing their career has made them worth to be prophets in their own land, and with a new videoclip, for the track Espírito Livre.

Melech Mechaya was founded in 2006 in Lisbon, with the same line-up than the current one: Miguel Veríssimo on the clarinet; João Graça on the violin; André Santos on guitar; João Novais on double bass and Francisco Caiado on percussion. Since their beginnings they have mixed traditional tunes and their own compositions, always with a personal approach that manages to combine the great beauty of the compositions with a fresh and lighthearted attitude that comes to the live performance in a surprising and exciting way. Their music has been described as a kind of modern folklore. Up to now Melech Mechaya have been playing non-stop in their homeland Portugal, and have performed more than 40 times in Spain, and they have also been playing in countries as different as Croatia, Cape Verde, Brazil, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Austria and Germany, playing both in large open air festivals and in theatres, metro stations, historic buildings… always wrapping the audience around their little finger and captivating the specialised press.
